My Coffee Table, Green Chest, Bookshelf, and Bar: Rad

Whenever people come to my home for the first time, they always compliment me on my decorating. From the art on the walls to the books on the shelf to the old ship door that now serves as a unique coffee table, simply put: my pad is rad.

The secret to decorating your home is actually very easy. It’s actually not a secret at all. It’s more like common sense. Make your home a reflection of yourself. Fill your house up with things you like. Decorate your home in a way that will make you very happy every day. You might not get as many compliments as I do, but if you have sophisticated aesthetic tastes, and friends/associates/guests that know good taste when they see it, you might. That’s not the point though; the point is, you should deck out your place so that it makes you totally happy.

Most of my furniture comes from other people – family, friends, etc. Most of my stuff is vintage hand-me-downs that I’ve restored. When you first set foot into my place you’ll notice the bikes. I collect beach cruisers and I park them in my living room. Then you’ll notice the green chest with a record player on top of it, and then you’ll notice my coffee table. We’ll get to the coffee table/dining table later, but let’s first talk about my green chest with a record player on top of it.

My green chest with a record player on top of it is a versatile piece of furniture. It used to be a bar. Now it stores records, dvds, and anything that I want to shove in there when I have visitors coming and I don’t want them to see clutter. What’s cool is that the chest, as mentioned, is green and matches both the abstract canvas that hangs over the sofa adjacent from the chest, and it also matches my vintage sofa that has been reupholstered in gold colored crushed velvet.

My gold-colored-crushed-velvet sofa matches my coffee table. The coffee table matches the Frida poster that hangs over the bar, which matches the orange and blue beach cruisers, which match the multi-colored bookshelf, which matches the green chest with a record player on top of it.

Add a few black and white photographs, blow them up to poster size, and put a few photo books on modern art and indie rock on your coffee table, and the next thing you know, everyone tells you how great your place is.

I know my place is great. My parents gave me a coffee table that used to be a ship door. It’s from the sixties. They lacquered it themselves. You can see rope and wood and little bits of the past that got under the lacquer. Everyone just loves that piece. My ship door/coffee table serves many purposes: holds beverages, books, bicycles parts, and more. Also, I eat my dinner on it since I don’t like eating dinner on the breakfast bar. I love my coffee table.

The secret to decorating isn’t just having one single piece of furniture that you love. It’s not about having some great theme, nor is it about making your entire place match. It’s about making your space look like how you feel. If you do this the place will look good to you, which may or may not look good to other people, but that’s not the main concern anyway.

You want it to look good to you. And that will make your pad rad too.
