Green Your Home with Eco-Friendly Furniture

“Being green” was, apparently, not so easy back in the day. Nowadays, there are plenty of ways to be green. Driving your car less to save fuel, turning off all your lights in the house when you’re not there, starting a compost pile in your backyard to use in your garden—these are all simple green solutions. Filling your home with eco-friendly furniture is another step you can take towards living a greener life.

By choosing to furnish your home with eco-friendly furniture, you not only help contribute to the overall efforts of waste reduction, but you also help fight against deforestation, logging, and global warming. It seems like buying a bedroom set isn’t going to help change things, but the fact is that by buying a bedroom set made from sustainable resources or recycled materials tells other manufacturers that you no longer want to purchase a product that isn’t green. While many manufacturers have gone green, started creating greener products, or donate a percentage of their profits to an environmental organization, there are still plenty more that disregard eco-friendly as a fad or as something too expensive to manufacture. Purchasing eco-friendly furniture sends the message that all companies should start building environmentally sound furniture.

Finding out what furniture is made of is the first step towards greening your home. Where the product is manufactured and whether the wood has been harvested with sustainable resources or a certified wood-harvesting site are both signs that the furniture is made with green intentions. Harmful chemicals need to be avoided at all costs, so ask whether the product was made with any. Furniture made from recycable materials is even better, as it means that plastic goods that were headed for a landfill have been redirected into a new creation. Patio furniture, beanbags, futons, home office furniture and more have all been constructed from leftover waste. Bedroom sets and living room furniture made in ready-to-assemble fashion often means it’s constructed from engineered wood, such as medium density fiberboard or plywood, which helps protect against deforestation. These furniture pieces tend to be more affordable, as they do not involve solid hardwood; their quality is not compromised, however, since ready-to-assemble furniture like this is extremely durable and sturdy.

Environmentally friendly furniture is, like mentioned earlier, a part of living green. In order to make a significant change, we all need to pitch in and do our part. Replacing table lamps with energy efficient light bulbs and bringing your own bag to go grocery shopping with are all great ways to help out; eco-friendly furniture is just another step that will bring us all closer to a greener world.
